INTRODUCTION

The State Council Spelling Genius Competition is organised to enhance the intelligence and words capabilities of members in the Company Section. This competition shall be an annual one and is open to any Boy in Company Section between the age of 12 years and 15 years. However, such a participant MUST meet all the requirements and follow the regulations.

Each participant MUST:

  •  be an active member of a Boys' Brigade Company within Lagos State Council. 
  •  Must have a State Membership Number .
  • be within the age bracket of 12 – 15 years old.
  • be ready to supply details of his age when required so to do; and
  • NOT be a student in the any University or higher institution of learning

 Any violation of the eligibility rule or false declaration of age will lead to disqualification of the concerned participant.

STAGES FOR THE COMPETITION

  • There shall be three (3) levels for the competition – Battalion, Zones and State.
  • Participants will commence the competition at the Battalion levels in their respective Battalions.
  • At each Battalion Council level, the best Competitor will progress to the Zonal level.
  • The best at the zonal levels will progress to the State Finals.
  • The State Finals will have first and second runner-up.
  • The winner and the two runners-up at the State level will be presented with prizes, while the winners at the Battalion levels will be presented with prizes. 

COMPETITION ROUNDS

The competition at the Battalion levels will have two (2) distinct rounds.

ROUND 1 - WRITTEN SPEELING BEE

The round will be in written format. Participants will be required to write down the correct spelling of words on a form specially designed for that purpose and supplied to them at the commencement of the competition.  Regulations for the round: 

  

  • written words MUST not be cancelled, changed, erased or re-written; There should be no mutilation of any letter.
  • The meaning of this is that participants are not allowed to correct any error on their papers.
  • ONLY participants that scored 70%will be allowed to progress to the next round.
  • In this wise, Captains are kindly advised to explain this to their Boys.

ROUND 2 - ORAL

Round 2 will be an elimination round.

  •   ONLY English words shall be used.
  • Participants are advised to study their lexicon to study and learn correct spelling of words and study broadly for the competition.


However, at the Zonal and State levels, there will be straight rounds of spelling until the winner emerges.

rules for the day of the competition

Participants are required to:

  • be very audible and clear on their spelling.
  • spell the word after it must have been pronounced by the Panelist and after he has indicated that he /she is through with the pronunciation.
  • each participant has 60 seconds after saying the first letter of the word, to spell his word.
  • It is within the right and responsibility of the participant to request the following:  re-pronunciation & or definition.
  • Participants are advised to make use of these rights and responsibilities and not rely only on pronunciations.
  • A participant can NOT change the order of the letters in a word after spelling the word .

DECISION REQUISITES

  • The Spelling Bee will be conducted primarily in English. In the event of any complaint, suggestion or need for clarification, such should be directed to the adjudicator. 
  • Complaint(s) concerning the spelling of a word must be brought up before the end of the that particular round. 
  • ONLY British words will be allowed, and the Oxford English Dictionary will be used in the competition as the final authority for all pronunciations and spelling.

REGISTRATION FOR THE COMPETITON

  • Registration for the competition shall be Online on the portal of the Lagos State Council. The competition is FREE. 
  • Companies registering more than one participant should be guided against any form of malpractice. 
  • Registered competitors will be given a unique code after submitting their online form.  
  • After registration, participants will be duly informed on the date, time and venue for the competition at the Battalion Council.   

Please note that it is the responsibility of the Company Captain to regularly check the State website for updates and the telephone number used to register to ensure effective communication.
